4 Days in Athens and Delphi: Day-by-Day Plan, Seasons and Food

The ancient buildings of the Acropolis in Athens

If you have four days in Athens, give one to the Acropolis and its museum, one to Delphi and one to the city centre and the sunset at Sounion; leave the last day for shopping and rest. This balance alternates tiring archaeological-site days with lighter ones. The plan below is built on the itinerary of the Athens and Delphi Tour, and we have added practical notes for each day.

Day-by-day plan

Day 1: Arrival, the Acropolis and Plaka

The day begins with a morning flight from Istanbul to Athens. After arriving in the city, you visit the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. In the evening there is a walk through the streets of Plaka, and the night is spent in Athens.

Note: On a day that starts with a morning flight, the climb up to the Acropolis can feel tiring. Drink water on the plane, set off in comfortable shoes and pack a hat in your small bag. We describe what to see at the Acropolis in detail in our article on things to see in Athens.

Day 2: Delphi

The day is devoted to Delphi. The journey is about 180 km and takes 2.5 to 3 hours. You visit the sanctuary of Apollo and the Delphi Archaeological Museum, then return to Athens in the evening.

Note: As you spend a long time on the coach, bring water, snacks and something to read. Delphi can be cooler than Athens; depending on the season, keep a light cardigan with you. To refresh your interest before the trip, take a look at our guide to ancient Delphi.

Day 3: The city centre and Sounion

In the morning you watch the changing of the guard in front of Parliament on Syntagma Square, then see the Panathenaic Stadium. In the afternoon you take the coastal road to Sounion, about 1 to 1.5 hours away, and watch the sunset at the Temple of Poseidon.

Note: Cape Sounion can be windy. The air cools quickly after sunset, so bring a cardigan or a light jacket. The open area on the sea side of the temple is ideal for photos.

Day 4: Free time and return

The last day is for free time and shopping; Ermou Street and Monastiraki are the natural places for this. Then you return from Athens to Istanbul.

Note: Packing your suitcase in the morning and heading out ready for free time reduces the rush at departure time.

Which season should you go?

Athens has a typical Mediterranean climate: summers are hot and dry, winters mild and wetter.

  • Spring: A very good time for visiting archaeological sites. The weather is usually mild and the countryside green.
  • Summer: The sun is very strong; midday can be hard going at shadeless sites such as the Acropolis and Delphi. Sightseeing early in the morning and drinking plenty of water are important.
  • Autumn: The sea and the air are still warm, and the summer crowds start to thin. A comfortable time for school groups and cultural trips.
  • Winter: The city is quieter and sightseeing in the cool air is enjoyable. As there may be rainy days, a raincoat and waterproof shoes come in handy. The mountainous area around Delphi is colder.

What to eat in Athens?

Greek cuisine shares many flavours with Turkish cuisine, so menus often feel familiar.

  • Souvlaki and gyros: Meat cooked on a skewer or a rotisserie, served with pitta bread. A quick, filling lunch.
  • Moussaka: A baked dish of aubergine, minced meat and béchamel sauce.
  • Horiatiki (village salad): Tomato, cucumber, olives and a thick slice of white cheese.
  • Tzatziki: A thicker, meze version of cacık.
  • Spanakopita: A crispy pastry with spinach and cheese.
  • Loukoumades: Small dough balls in honey syrup; perfect for a sweet break.

The tavernas in Plaka offer a lively setting for dinner. Participants with food allergies or special dietary needs should mention this at registration, as it makes planning group meals easier.

Practical notes

  • Greece uses the euro; card payments are common, but some cash is handy for small purchases.
  • Keep a hat, sunscreen and water with you at archaeological sites in every season.
  • Visa and entry requirements vary by person, passport type and date. Before travelling, check the current situation with the official sources of the country concerned and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye; we also share the current requirements at the quote stage.

Which tour is this plan based on?

The itinerary above is based on the 3-night, 4-day Athens and Delphi Tour with hotel accommodation. This is a new programme outside the catalogue, considered suitable for school groups, culture lovers, families and groups. The Balkan and European tours in the catalogue do not stop in Athens, so it was designed as a separate route for those who want to focus on ancient Greece. We finalise the details together at the quote stage according to your group's ages and interests.

Frequently asked questions

Are 4 days enough for Athens?

It is possible to fit the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, Plaka, the city centre, Sounion and a day trip to Delphi into four days. This plan also sets aside one of the four days for free time.

When is the most comfortable season to visit Athens?

Spring and autumn stand out as the most comfortable times for visiting archaeological sites. In summer the sun is very strong, so you need to move sightseeing to the early morning.

Why go to Sounion at sunset?

The Temple of Poseidon stands on a headland overlooking the sea. The sun setting into the sea behind the temple's columns is one of the best-loved views in the area.

What should you definitely try in Greek cuisine?

Souvlaki, moussaka, village salad (horiatiki) and, for dessert, loukoumades are popular choices. Many dishes resemble their Turkish counterparts, so getting used to the menu is easy.
