Uludağ School Trip Guide: A Planning Checklist for Teachers

Being close to Istanbul and possible as either a day trip or an overnight stay, Uludağ is a practical option for school winter trips. On TatiliYakala's programme, students first take a short history tour in Bursa and then head for the snow on Uludağ. The keys to planning are choosing the right length for the age group, sending student numbers and equipment sizes in advance, and informing parents early about clothing.
The educational value of the trip
An Uludağ trip isn't just a day in the snow. The programme begins in Bursa, the first Ottoman capital. Students see a village dating from the founding period in Cumalıkızık, and in Bursa the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami), the Green Mosque and Tomb, and the tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi at Tophane. This gives them a chance to see on the spot the period they have read about in history lessons.
On the way up the mountain, geography comes into play: the vegetation changing with altitude, the relationship between climate and elevation, and the contribution of winter tourism to the regional economy are all topics you can discuss with students. Skiing and snow activities are valuable for physical education and social development; for many students, it's their first real encounter with snow.
Day trip or 1 night, 2 days?
For school groups, choosing the length of the trip is the most important decision.
- Day trip: departure is early in the morning and you return in the evening. It suits groups short on time and older students. For the itinerary, see our article on the Uludağ day trip.
- 1 night, 2 days: offers a more relaxed pace for first-time skiers and younger students; there's more time to ski and the travel fatigue is split. Accommodation is at a hotel, with dinner and an open buffet breakfast the next morning included in the programme. Details are in our article on the 2-day Uludağ tour.
For overnight trips, approval processes with school management and parents take longer, so you need to start planning early.
Planning timeline
For school trips, the following order makes things easier:
- Setting the date: consider the exam timetable, the mid-year break and the snow season together. For snow, January and February are usually reliable. For seasonal trends, see our article When to visit Uludağ.
- Gathering initial information: establish the estimated number of students, age range and number of teachers.
- Quote and programme: once the number of participants and age range are sent, the programme and contents are confirmed in the quote; whether ski passes and equipment are included in the package is also discussed at this stage.
- Informing parents: the programme, departure and return times, clothing list and emergency contacts are sent to parents in writing.
- Equipment sizes: shoe size, height and weight are collected for students who will ski. If this information is sent in advance, equipment sizes can be prepared and waiting at the ski rental shop is shorter.
- Final check: road and snow conditions are monitored as the date approaches.
Students who can't ski
In most groups, the majority of students are skiing for the first time. Those who don't want to ski can have free time in the snow; for those who want to learn, instructor support can be planned at the quote stage. Equipment and instructor planning is done together with the teachers in charge of the group. Splitting students into small groups by level is effective for both safety and learning. General information about a first ski experience is in our article Skiing on Uludağ for the first time.
Safety and order during the day
Managing a large group of students in a snowy area requires care. Our suggestions:
- Buddy system: give every student a buddy, and buddies should stay together.
- Colour marker: a hat or armband in a colour chosen by the school makes it easier to spot students from a distance in the snow.
- Fixed meeting point: choose a point everyone knows, such as the front of the ski rental shop.
- Head counts: count students every time they board the coach and every time you change location.
- Phone list: students should have the teachers' and guide's numbers written down; phone batteries run down quickly in the cold.
- Helmets: students who ski are advised to wear a helmet.
Clothing list to send to parents
A student who boards the coach in the morning in trainers and jeans will be wet and cold by the afternoon. Sending parents a short list before the tour prevents this:
- Waterproof jacket and trousers (if not available, they can be provided by the ski rental shop)
- Waterproof gloves and a spare pair
- Hat, neck warmer and ski socks (with a spare pair)
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Boots with non-slip soles
- Personal medication (with the teacher informed)

Meals and dietary needs
The day trip programme includes a village breakfast spread in Cumalıkızık, a sucuk sandwich break on Uludağ and iskender in Bursa. On the overnight programme, dinner and breakfast are served at the hotel. You need to let us know at the planning stage about students with allergies or special dietary needs.
Snow or road conditions
Access to Uludağ depends on road and snow conditions. Conditions are monitored as the date approaches; if necessary, a date change or an alternative programme is planned together with the school management. Mentioning this possibility when informing parents reduces last-minute uncertainty.
