When to Go to İğneada? Seasons, Clothing and Getting There

Wooden camping tents in the forest at İğneada

If you want to see İğneada at its liveliest, choose the period from late spring to autumn: in May and June the forest turns every shade of green, in July and August the sea and lake take centre stage, and in September and October the forest changes colour and the crowds thin out. Whatever the season, have waterproof shoes, mosquito repellent and layers in your bag. It is reached from Istanbul by a road journey of a few hours.

İğneada through the seasons

Spring: March, April, May

Spring is when the longoz forest wakes up. The trees come into leaf, migrating birds arrive and the forest fills with lively sounds. As the water level rises with snowmelt and rain, some paths can be muddy. In March and April the weather is cool and changeable; May is an excellent month for walking.

What to wear: Waterproof shoes, a raincoat, layers and a light jacket.

Summer: June, July, August

In summer İğneada offers both the forest and the long beaches of the Black Sea coast. The forest shade keeps you cool, and activities such as canoeing and pedal boats on Lake Mert become a real pleasure. Remember that the Black Sea can be rough and you need to watch out for currents. There can be a lot of mosquitoes in the forest.

What to wear: Light, long-sleeved clothing (against mosquitoes), a hat, sunscreen, swimwear, sandals and comfortable shoes for walking.

Autumn: September, October, November

This is when the forest takes on shades of yellow, orange and brown, a beautiful time for photography. Bird migration starts again. In September the weather is still mild; in October and November it gets cooler and there is more rain. With the summer crowds gone, it is an ideal time for a quiet weekend.

What to wear: Layers, a windbreaker or raincoat and waterproof shoes.

Winter: December, January, February

In winter the forest may be flooded, creating a misty, quiet atmosphere. Although this period has a beauty of its own, some walking trails may not be usable and the weather is cold and windy. Snow can also fall on the Black Sea coast.

What to wear: A thick coat, a hat, gloves, waterproof boots and spare socks.

Getting from Istanbul to İğneada

İğneada belongs to the Demirköy district of Kırklareli and lies on the Black Sea coast, close to the Bulgarian border. You get there from Istanbul by road; the route heads inland into Thrace via Silivri or Saray, and in the final stretch passes through the wooded slopes of the Istranca (Yıldız) Mountains.

To give you an idea: TatiliYakala's day trip programme departs at 06:00 in the morning, stops for breakfast in Silivri at 07:30, and on the way back sets off at 18:00 and arrives at 21:00. So the return journey takes about three hours; this can vary with traffic and weather conditions.

By your own car

As there are bends on the forest roads, drive carefully after dark. Plan your fuel and other needs before setting off; settlements can become sparse along the way.

By public transport

Direct public transport options from Istanbul to İğneada are limited; you usually travel with a change in Kırklareli or Demirköy. Check the current timetable before you set off.

On an organised tour

For groups and families who want to go without the hassle of changes, with breakfast, lunch and activities included, the İğneada Longoz Forests tour runs as a day trip or as 1 night, 2 days. On the overnight programme, you stop at İğneada Lighthouse on the first day, there is a campfire in the evening and a barbecue at Lake Mert on the second day.

Day trip or overnight stay?

The day trip is enough to see the forest, the lake and the birdhouse activity in a short time. However, setting off very early in the morning and returning late in the evening can be tiring for families with young children. The 1 night, 2 days programme offers a more relaxed pace, evening activities and a separate day at Lake Mert. To get to know the longoz itself, have a look at the İğneada Longoz Forests guide.

İğneada with young children

For families with young children, choosing the season matters even more when planning İğneada. Late spring and September are neither too hot nor too muddy, so they offer a comfortable experience on the trails. In summer, the lake activities and the sea are children's favourite part, but taking precautions against mosquitoes is essential. Pushchairs can struggle on the forest paths; a baby sling or back carrier is more practical. Bringing spare clothes, wet wipes and snacks makes the long journey and the day outdoors easier.
