The capital of Spain. The Prado Museum, the Royal Palace and the Plaza Mayor are the main stops. The Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro Park were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as the 'Landscape of the Arts and Sciences'.
Set on a hill encircled by the River Tagus, Toledo bears the traces of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures. The historic city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986; its cathedral and synagogues are its main buildings.
The capital of Andalusia. The Cathedral, the Alcázar palace and the Archivo de Indias were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987; the cathedral's bell tower, the Giralda, was converted from a minaret dating from the Almohad period.
The capital of the Umayyads of al-Andalus, Córdoba is symbolised by the Mezquita (Great Mosque), begun in the 8th century and later converted into a cathedral. The historic centre was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984 and extended in 1994.
Granada was the last capital of the Nasrid dynasty; the Alhambra, the Generalife gardens and the Albayzín quarter were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984 (extended in 1994). The city passed to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492.
