Founded by Rahmi M. Koç, the museum opened on 13 December 1994 in Hasköy on the shore of the Golden Horn. It occupies the historic Lengerhane building, where anchors and chains were made for the Ottoman navy, and the shipyard site established by Şirket-i Hayriye in 1861. The collection focuses on the history of transport, industry and communications, with road and rail vehicles and maritime and aviation exhibits on display.
The Golden Horn is a natural inlet branching off the Bosphorus on Istanbul's European side. The shoreline around Hasköy and Sütlüce is good for a walk between museums and a stop to enjoy the view.
A miniature park that opened on 2 May 2003 on the northeastern shore of the Golden Horn. Models at 1:25 scale of 135 buildings from Türkiye and the former Ottoman lands are displayed across an area of about 60,000 square metres.
